Violin Strings
Violin Strings
Before you change strings, settle two things: the size of the instrument, and whether you need a whole set or a single string. Sets run from 4/4 through 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8, so a child's violin does not end up wearing a full-size set. The E is usually the first string to go, and it is sold on its own; many sets are offered with a choice of steel, gold-plated or platinum-plated E, and that one string changes how the top voice speaks, while single G, D and A strings mean a break does not cost you the whole set. Keep a spare E in the case.
