A zhongruan carries four strings, and the third and fourth are wound, so they are the pair that goes dull and false first; buying a single is normal here, and a whole set is not always the answer. Mixing makers across one instrument leaves the tension uneven under the hand, so it is worth staying with one brand through a full change before you judge it. The D'Addario RUAN01 comes only as a complete set, medium tension, gauges 16 to 44, and it will feel different from the other makers on this shelf. This shelf also holds zhonghu strings, mostly as separate inner and outer singles, with Kaikai and Mudan sold as complete sets.
