Chin Rests

Chin rest size follows the instrument rather than the player: a 4/4 violin takes the 4/4, a 3/4 takes the 3/4, and the 1/2-1/4 covers the smaller student sizes. Once it is on, the jaw should rest lightly and the shoulder should stay down; if you have to clamp with the neck to feel secure, the way you hold the violin is the thing to change, not the fitting. Turn the clamp barrels until the rest stops moving and no further, because over-tightening presses on the ribs and leaves marks. When a child moves up to a larger instrument, the chin rest moves up in size with it.
