A different way to hear Taipei

Most visitors meet traditional music behind glass, or from the back of a concert hall. Here you meet it in the room where it is taught, repaired and played — close enough to see how a string is bowed, ask why a soundboard is shaped the way it is, and hear the difference between two instruments that look almost identical.

Lin's Culture has been a working music house in Taipei since 1982: a shop, a school and a small performance space, with the makers, teachers and performers that come with it. An experience here is a conversation with the people who do this every day, not a performance staged for an audience.

Instruments you may discover

Which instruments feature depends on the format and who is available. These are the ones most often at the centre of a visit.

What an experience could include

The programme is put together for each group. Not every element appears every time — what fits depends on the format you ask for, how long you have, and which musicians are free that day.

01

Meet the instruments

See them in the hand, not in a case: how they are built, what they are made of, and why.

02

Hear them played

A short demonstration by a teacher or performer, at close range, in a room built for it.

03

Discover where the sound comes from

What the instrument is for, where it sits in Chinese and Taiwanese music, and what to listen for.

04

Try one, with guidance

Where the format allows, hold an instrument and make the first sound on it yourself.

05

Talk with a musician

Ask the questions a label in a museum cannot answer.

Who it is for

  • Independent travellers and couples
  • Families with children old enough to listen
  • Small private groups
  • University and exchange groups
  • Corporate and MICE visitors
  • Foreign residents in Taiwan

Larger groups are possible, but the room is intimate by design — tell us your numbers and we will say honestly what works.

For hotels, travel agencies and DMCs

We are glad to work with concierges, tour operators and destination management companies putting together cultural programmes in Taipei. Write to us with the shape of what you need — languages, group size, time of day, whether it sits inside a longer itinerary — and we will tell you what we can arrange and what we cannot.

How this currently works

We are still developing this into a regular programme. For now, experiences are arranged one at a time, by enquiry, around the dates you are in Taipei and the musicians available then. That means we cannot offer a fixed schedule or confirm a format instantly — but it also means what you get is put together for your group rather than run to a script.

Ask about a music experience

Tell us your Taipei dates, group size and what interests you. We will suggest a suitable format and confirm what is possible.

Questions people ask

Can I book a session for a specific date and time?

Not as a fixed booking, yet. Send us your dates and we will check which musicians are free and propose a format. We confirm by email rather than automatically.

How long does an experience last?

It depends on the format you ask for and what you want to include. Tell us how much time you have and we will suggest something that fits it.

How much does it cost?

There is no fixed price, because there is no fixed programme. We quote per enquiry once we know the group size, the length and what you would like to include.

Do I need any musical experience?

No. Most visitors have never held any of these instruments. If a hands-on trial is part of the format, it is guided from the first note.

Is it in English?

We can usually arrange English or Chinese. Tell us your preference in the form and we will confirm what is possible for your dates.

Can children take part?

Yes, if they are old enough to listen and handle an instrument carefully. Tell us their ages and we will suggest a suitable shape.

Where are you?

In central Taipei, at 台北市中正區新生南路一段 138-1 號 1F — walking distance from Dongmen and Zhongxiao Xinsheng stations.
