Wang Guotong is a renowned erhu performer and educator. Born in Shandong in 1939, he studied under folk musicians such as Liu Tianhua, Chen Zhenduo, and Jiang Fengzhi. In 1960 he graduated early from the Central Conservatory of Music with distinction and stayed on as a faculty member. In 1972 he became principal erhu of the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, and in 1983 head of the Chinese Music Department at the Central Conservatory of Music. He was awarded the title of Professor in 1988. In 1991 he was invited to serve as Chinese music advisor to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and in 1992 became head of its Chinese Music Department.
He currently serves as head of the Chinese Music Department at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, visiting professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, standing council member of the China Nationalities Orchestra Society, artistic advisor to the China Record Corporation, music advisor to the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, art critic for the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and member of the Composers and...
