The sixth-generation lineage master of the Pudong School of pipa. Born in 1922 in Nanhui, Jiangsu; died in 2005. A founding figure of modern Chinese folk-music education, an outstanding folk-music educator and theorist, and a renowned pipa performer, arranger, and composer. He served as a senior professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, a member of the Performing Arts Committee and the Folk Music Committee of the Chinese Musicians' Association, and chairman of the Pipa Research Society. Born into a family of traditional Chinese physicians, he was immersed in the folk music of the Jiangnan region from childhood. At the age of six he began studying the pipa, erhu, sanxian, and other instruments under his father, and by twelve he had committed the traditional eight grand pieces of Jiangnan sizhu (silk-and-bamboo) music to heart, able to sing them by memory. Through the guidance of Shen Haochu, the renowned lineage master of the Pudong School, and his own diligent study, he inherited the Pudong School and became its sole lineage heir.
