A renowned dizi performer, a national first-class performer of the Central National Orchestra, a member of the Chinese Musicians Association, a council member of the Ministry of Culture Artists' Friendship Association, a council member of the Beijing Musical Instrument Popularization Association, and a recipient of a special government stipend. Born in 1932 into a folk wind-music family in Ziwei Village, Ding County, Hebei Province, he began studying folk wind instruments at the age of 7 and made his stage debut at 10. In 1947 he was selected to study in the music department of the College of Arts at North China United University, and was later transferred into the orchestra of the North China United University Performing Arts Troupe to become a professional arts worker.
