A renowned dizi, xiao, and xun performer, educator, and composer; professor and doctoral supervisor at the China Conservatory of Music, deputy director of its Academic Committee, vice-chair of the Beijing Musicians Association, chair of the Chinese Bamboo Flute Society of the Chinese National Orchestral Society, and a senior professional-title review-panel member of the Ministry of Culture.

Mr. Zhang has repeatedly been honored for his achievements in music education, including the Beijing "High-Level Innovative Talent Teaching Master Award" in 2015 and the Ministry of Education's National Teaching Achievement First Prize in 2014. In composition, he won the Outstanding Award for "Weeping Flowers" at the Ministry of Culture's National Composition Competition for National Instrumental Music in 2010, and took charge of the music composition for the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games in 2008. His 2003 work "Bamboo Dream" won the First Prize for music composition at the Ministry of Culture's National Dance Competition. He has toured dozens of countries across Europe, Asia, America, and Africa to give concerts.
