A renowned dizi and xiao performer. Born in 1932 in Ziwei Village, Ding County, Hebei Province—a region celebrated for its folk wind-instrument playing. He began studying the guan and dizi at age seven, and nourished by a rich folk musical tradition, he developed a profound foundation in folk wind playing. He gave his first public performance at age ten. In 1947 he entered the Music Department of the Arts Institute of North China United University. He subsequently held positions in the orchestra of North China United University's performing troupe, the orchestra of the Central Song and Dance Ensemble, and the China National Traditional Orchestra (as a national first-class solo performer).

His playing embodies the characteristics of northern folk music: bold, resonant, full of breath, and brimming with passion. He won awards in the folk-instrument competitions of the World Festival of Youth and Students in both 1953 and 1955.
