Cai Liangyu, born in 1940, a native of Jinjiang County, Fujian, of Han ethnicity. From 1946 to 1950 she lived in the United States with her parents, returning to China in 1950. In 1966 she graduated from the Department of Music Theory at the Central Conservatory of Music. She is a research fellow at the Music Research Institute of the Chinese National Academy of Arts, primarily engaged in the study of Western music history and American music. In 1982 she went to the United States for self-funded study, and in 1991, at the invitation of the U.S.-China Academic Exchange Committee, she went to the United States for research. In 1952 she was named an Outstanding Expert of the Ministry of Culture and enjoys a special state allowance. From 1996 to 2002 she was repeatedly appointed by the Ministry of Culture, the Chinese National Academy of Arts, and the Music Research Institute to attend UNESCO working conferences on the safeguarding of intangible heritage.
