Description

Through a long course of development, the art of violin playing has formed a remarkably complete and scientific training system and possesses an exceedingly rich body of teaching material. By boldly drawing on the violin's training concepts and content while retaining traditional teaching, the erhu can broaden both our thinking and our performance horizons.

The erhu performer Cao Dewei selected suitable material from violin works by Kayser, Dont, Mazas, Kreutzer, Paganini, and others, adjusting the original scores to fit the "standard tuning and range of the erhu," and newly editing the bowings and fingerings. Arranged in order of increasing difficulty, these were compiled into the two-volume "Erhu Performance Technique Training."

After many years of use in professional conservatories, this material has proven highly effective. Performers have shown marked improvement in their ability to read staff notation, their sight-reading speed, their responsiveness to fixed keys and accidentals, and their command of various performance techniques—laying a solid foundation for their future development in the professional field of the erhu.
