Sixth-generation grandmaster and direct heir of the Pudong School of pipa. Born in Nanhui, Jiangsu in 1922; died in 2005. A founding figure of modern Chinese national-music education, an outstanding music educator and theorist, and a renowned pipa performer, arranger and composer. He served as senior professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, member of the Performing Arts Committee and the National Music Committee of the Chinese Musicians Association, and president of the Pipa Research Society. Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, he was immersed in the folk music of the Jiangnan region from childhood, learning pipa, erhu, sanxian and other instruments from his father at the age of six; by twelve he had committed the eight great traditional pieces of Jiangnan sizhu to heart and could sing them by mouth. Through the guidance of Shen Haochu, an eminent master and direct heir of the Pudong School pipa, and his own diligent study, he inherited the Pudong School and became its sole direct lineage heir.
