A renowned contemporary Chinese pipa performer and National First-Class Performer. She is a council member of the Chinese Musicians Association, principal pipa of the China National Traditional Orchestra, and a recipient of the special government allowance awarded by the State Council. She serves on the dissertation defense committee for graduate students of the Central Conservatory of Music and as a dissertation reviewer, and is a visiting professor of art education at Renmin University of China. Wu Yuxia began learning the pipa as a child, studying successively under such celebrated pipa masters as Liu Dehai, Li Guanghua, Chen Zemin, and Li Guangzu. Her awards include Second Prize at the inaugural National Pipa Competition in 1980, the Gold Award at the 1993 National Audio-Visual Products Evaluation, the Special Award at the 1996 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition, and the Highest Outstanding Performance Award at the 1999 Ministry of Culture central state-affiliated ensembles showcase marking the 50th anniversary of National Day.
