Description

Through its long development, the art of violin playing has formed a remarkably complete and scientific system of training, with an extraordinarily rich body of teaching materials. By boldly drawing on the training concepts and content of the violin while retaining its traditional pedagogy, the erhu can broaden both our thinking and our performing horizons.

The erhu performer Cao Dewei selected suitable material from violin works by Kayser, Dont, Mazas, Kreutzer, Paganini and others, adjusting the original scores to "standard erhu tuning and range," then re-editing the bowings and fingerings and arranging them in order of increasing difficulty into the two volumes of "Technical Training for Erhu Performance" (upper and lower).

After many years of use in professional institutions, these materials have proven highly effective. Performers have shown marked improvement in their ability to read staff notation, their sight-reading speed, their responsiveness to fixed keys and accidentals, and their command of various playing techniques, laying a solid foundation for future development in the professional field of the erhu.
