Spanish Voice × Early Music × Improvisation

Spanish singer and recorder player Irene Sorozábal, currently based in Amsterdam, comes to Lin’s Culture for an evening of music that brings together early music, traditional music, contemporary sounds, and free improvisation.

Active in the fields of early and contemporary music across Europe, Irene explores the expressive possibilities of sound, the body, and diverse musical traditions through both performance and creative work. In addition to singing and playing the recorder, she has participated in numerous festivals and collaborated with early music ensembles and choirs.

For this performance, Irene will be joined by three Taiwanese musicians:

Lin Hsiao-Feng|Dizi, Xiao
Lee Shih-Yang|Piano
Chuang Cheng-Ying|Zhongruan, Voice

Beginning with early music and moving toward traditional music, jazz, experimental music, and free improvisation, the concert creates a space where musicians from different musical backgrounds meet, listen, and respond to one another in the moment.

About “Lin’s Culture Sound Focus”

Lin’s Culture Sound Focus is a sound art and improvisational music series curated by Lin’s Culture, focusing on free improvisation, experimental sound, cross-cultural collaboration, and contemporary creation.

By bringing together musicians, sound artists, and interdisciplinary creators from Taiwan and around the world, the series explores the boundaries of sound and the possibilities of real-time creation. Through diverse and open artistic practices, Lin’s Culture Sound Focus aims to establish a distinctive international platform for sonic exchange in Taiwan.

Lin’s Culture Performance Space connects performing artists and audiences from around the world, creating a cultural platform for exchange and collaboration.

Artist Biographies

▍Irene Sorozábal|Voice

Born in Spain in 1996 and currently based in Amsterdam, Irene Sorozábal is a singer, recorder player, and creator whose work explores the relationships between sound, the body, and music across genres.

Her artistic practice often brings early music, traditional music, contemporary music, jazz, experimental performance, and free improvisation into a shared creative context.

Her recent works have been premiered at venues including Muziekgebouw (IJ-Salon 2026) and Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam.

Irene has performed at major festivals including Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Holland Festival, Amsterdam Fringe Festival, Zürcher Theater Spektakel, and Oude Muziek Utrecht.

Alongside her individual creative work, Irene is active in the European early music scene. She has collaborated with early music ensembles including Royal Wind Music and Cappella Sancta Maria, as well as choirs such as Cappella Amsterdam and Nederlands Kamerkoor.

She has also released two albums featuring primarily her own compositions:

  • Kurkuma (TRPTK, 2022)
  • Tales of the Uprooted (Habitable Records, 2024)


▍Shih-Yang Lee|Piano

Shih-Yang Lee is a pianist, improvisational music curator, and one of the key advocates for improvised music in Taiwan.

Active in free improvisation, contemporary music, and interdisciplinary performance both in Taiwan and internationally, he founded the Kadoh Improv Ensemble and continues to collaborate with musicians from Taiwan and around the world.

His works and performances have received recognition from the Golden Indie Music Awards, Taishin Arts Award, and Taipei Drama Awards, among others. His practice also frequently extends into dance, theater, and other performing arts.

For many years, Lee has been dedicated to curating improvisational music and fostering international exchange in Taiwan, creating dialogues between different generations, musical communities, and performance contexts.


▍Lin Hsiao-Feng|Flutes

Lin Hsiao-Feng is an improvising flutist and Music Director of Lin’s Culture. For many years, he has explored the possibilities of traditional wind instruments in contemporary music by combining flutes from different musical cultures with free improvisation.

Since 2011, he has curated the “Improvisation Gathering” series and has continued to promote improvisation, experimental music, and interdisciplinary performance through Lin’s Culture.

In 2024, his album Cadenza21 received the World Flute Society’s “World Flutist of the Year” award. That same year, he was invited to participate in the Cultural Olympiad in Paris.

In recent years, Lin has performed, participated in residencies, and engaged in international artistic exchanges across Asia, Europe, and the United States, bringing his unique approach to flute performance to stages around the world.


▍Cheng-Ying Chuang|Countertenor, Zhongruan

Cheng-Ying Chuang is a UK-based cross-cultural musician and Artistic Director of the world music ensemble Muse Tread.

His distinctive practice combines countertenor voice with liuqin, zhongruan, and theorbo, creating a unique cross-cultural approach to music and improvisation that bridges traditions across Europe and Asia.

Born in Taipei into a family with a strong appreciation for Western classical music, Chuang began studying the Chinese plucked-string instruments liuqin and zhongruan at the age of 12 under Cheng Tsui-Ping.

He holds a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the Birmingham Conservatoire, where he studied with Julian Pike and Christine Cairns and participated in masterclasses with Michael Chance. He also holds a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture from National Taiwan University.

Chuang has served as a Special Assistant at the School of Music of Suzhou University of Science and Technology, where he also worked as a guest conductor of the Chinese Orchestra and Choir and taught ruan performance.
