Born in Shanghai; musicologist and pipa performer, currently deputy director of the Shanghai Oriental Chinese Orchestra. In his early years he studied under Ma Shenglong, specializing in the pipa, and held positions with the Shanghai Folk Orchestra and the Shanghai Peking Opera Theatre. In middle age he turned to music theory research, devoting himself to scholarly study of yanyue (banquet music) and the Dunhuang music manuscripts, and serving as a researcher at the Shanghai Art Research Institute. Through long, dedicated work in both the practice and study of folk music, he has authored more than ten specialist books, including "Pipa Playing Technique" and "A Study of Peking Opera Vocal Music," and has published over a hundred papers, making important contributions to the study of traditional Chinese music theory and operatic music.
