Yuan Zhizhong was born in 1977 in Shijiazhuang, Hebei. From 1996 to 2007 he studied successively at Jiangsu University of Science and Technology (now Jiangsu University) and Zhejiang University, earning a doctorate in engineering from Zhejiang University. From 2008 to 2010 he conducted postdoctoral research in the physics department of the University of Trento in Italy. After returning to China, he worked at Jiangsu Huantai Group and the School of Materials Science of Jiangsu University. In 2018 he received the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award.
In his spare time from scientific research, he has been devoted to the study of dizi culture, and has published works including A Biography of Yu Xunfa, Master of Chinese Dizi Art (Hua Mulan Culture Press, Taiwan, 2015), A Few Holes, a Whole Lifetime—A Glimpse into Chang Dunming's Art of Dizi and Xiao Making (Jiangsu University Press, 2022), and Learning the Bamboo Dizi from Scratch (China Science and Culture Audio-Visual Publishing Co., Ltd., 2023).
