About this item
Author: Chang Chi-jen
Born in 1945 in Pingyuan County, Guangdong Province. He began studying piano at the age of nine, won an award in the Taiwan Provincial Piano Competition at fifteen, and graduated from the Department of Sociology at Tunghai University. He later went to The Mannes College of Music in New York, specializing in orchestral conducting, and graduated "with distinction." After graduating, he studied conducting under Herbert Blomstedt, conductor of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. He received a conducting award from Julius Rudel, director of the New York City Opera, and served as assistant conductor at the Mannes Opera. That same year he became conductor and director of the New York Young Artists Chamber Symphony Orchestra. Among his teachers were many world-renowned figures: he studied orchestral conducting with Carl Bamberger, Paul Berl, Richard Lert, and Blomstedt; Schenkerian analysis with theory masters Felix Salzer, Carl Schachter, and Saul Novak; composition with Hsu Tsang-houei, David Loeb, and Peter Stern; and twentieth-century analysis with Chou Wen-chung and George Perle.
